We are based in Helsinki.
We work with municipalities
and developers on decisions
that are hard to reverse.
Cities are not designed once. They are never finished. Urban spaces change over the years, adapting to new moments that are hard to forecast with precision. We understand the complex and dynamic nature of cities profoundly and see every site with multidimensional lenses. Our work focuses on understanding changing form and context. We create plausible future scenarios and make the choice between them explicit: what each one gains, what it gives up, and when the choice closes.
Grounded Creativity
We are pragmatic about constraints and inventive within them. Every gesture we propose is backed by data.
Organized Complexity
Cities are shaped by more forces than any single plan can hold. We are drawn to that ambiguity, and we work with it rather than simplifying it away.
Computational Frontier
We build our own tools and borrow ideas from well beyond design, from complexity science, simulation, physics and biology. The methods of this field are still being invented, and we intend to be among those inventing them.
At home in uncertainty
Raphael L. Padilha
Founder
Raphael is an architect and urban planner from Manaus, Brazil, now with years of experience in detailed urban planning at the City of Helsinki, coordinating consultants, stakeholders and infrastructure on inner-city sites. He works on the side of the table where plans have to be justified: in participation, in committee, and against the question every planner eventually faces, why not the other option?
Behind the studio sits a larger question: how can anyone plan a city whose future cannot be known in advance? Cities keep changing long after the plan is approved, and linear planning methods were not built for that. Frente Urbana is where he pursues it, drawing on complexity science and computational design to make uncertainty something planners can work with.
His methods include scenario and rule-based planning, generative and parametric design, agent-based simulation, environmental analysis and evolutionary multi-objective optimization. On larger projects, the studio works with a network of specialists in environmental science, transport planning, urban economics, real estate and the social sciences.
He holds an MSc in Urban Studies and Planning from Aalto University, and works in English, Portuguese and Finnish.
